The Longhorn Cowfish (Lactoria cornuta) is somewhat reef safe. They are known to eat tubeworms (feather dusters) and may occasionally nip corals. They have fascinating personalities and will provide endless entertainment. These fish are peaceful to most fish except other Longhorn Cows. Do not keep two of them together, unless they are paired. This fish requires a 250+ gallon aquarium, when full grown. It is omnivorous and should be fed a mix of meaty and vegetable based foods like mysis shrimp, spirulina, herbivore frozen foods, algae sheets, and other popular mixes like Rods or LRS. Boxfish are timid eaters and you should avoid housing them with aggressive feeders like Triggers, Puffers, or large Wrasses. Max size is roughly 20″. Shipping size varies from 1.5 – 2.5.
WARNING – Similar to other Boxfish, the Longhorn’s skin is poisonous. When it dies, or is stressed, it can release a toxin, through it’s mucous glands, that is potentially lethal to other tank members, including other Longhorns. Barrier Reef is not liable for any losses due to toxin release.
