Rotala ‘nanjean’ often named sp. ‘Nanjenshan’ is a plant native to Taiwan where it has only been found in a single location near the town of Nanjenshan. Itis believed to be a natural hybrid of R. rotundifolia and R. wallichii.
Rotala nanjean/ nanjenshan is a beautiful delicate fine-leaved midground plant with needle-like leaves that can turn a deep red under strong light. The plants growing tips naturally arch downward, making it an attractive choice for aquascapes.
Similar to the more challenging R. wallichii, Rotala nanjean thrives in soft water rich in CO2. Adequate light and iron are also crucial for achieving the rich reddish hues at the stem’s apex. While it has specific requirements, it is not hugely difficult to grow, CO2 and high lighting are a must for success. It grows dense and bushy and looks best planted in a big group.
Handle it like wallichii; it has a comparable growth rate but tends to be a bit bushier. Trimming back healthy top growth and replanting them, along with removing the lower sections of the stems, enhances the plant’s appearance.
