Nematobrycon lacortei (Red eye/Rainbow Emperor Tetra)

The Nematobrycon lacortei, commonly referred to as the Red Eye Emperor Tetra or Rainbow Emperor Tetra, is a beautiful and lesser-known freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. This species belongs to the family Characidae and originates from South America, specifically in the Atrato and San Juan river basins in Colombia.

Key Characteristics:

1. Appearance:

   • A slender, streamlined body with iridescent rainbow-like coloration.
   • Prominent red eyes, giving it the “Red Eye” moniker.
   • Fins are often tinted with vibrant hues, complementing its shimmering body.

2. Size:

   • Grows to about 45 cm (1.52 inches) in length.

3. Behavior:

   • Peaceful and shoaling, making it an excellent candidate for community aquariums.
   • Prefers to swim in groups of six or more, which enhances their natural behavior and coloration.

4. Habitat Requirements:

   • Prefers soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.07.5).
   • Optimal temperature: 2228C (7282F).
   • Requires a well-planted tank with dim lighting to mimic its natural environment.

5. Diet:

   • Omnivorous, feeding on small live foods, frozen foods, and high-quality flakes or pellets.

6. Compatibility:

   • Compatible with other peaceful species like tetras, small rasboras, and Corydoras catfish.

7. Sexual Dimorphism:

   • Males are typically more colorful and have longer fins than females.

8. Breeding:

   • Egg scatterers. They require soft, acidic water conditions to breed successfully.
   • Provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for egg-laying.
